What to Expect on Youth Tour

Youth Tour was developed in the 1950s as a way to educate rural students about our nation's capital, co-ops, and history. To this day, it continues to be a nation-wide event that converges in Washington, D.C. with 1,800+ students eager to have fun, try new things, make friends, and--for most--get their first taste of the "real world."

Students going on Youth Tour can plan to spend jam-packed days exploring museums, zoos, national monuments and Arlington National Cemetery, talking with legislative representatives in the Capitol, having dinner and a dance party with students from across the country, and much more.

Nitty gritty details: Apart from fun, Youth Tour is a learning and growing opportunity for students. It is a great eye-opener if they are planning to go to college the following summer. Here are some of the nitty-gritty details your student needs to be able to manage before applying for Youth Tour:

  • Co-Existing: Rooming with another student (females with females, males with males).
  • Hygiene: The week is extremely hot. Sunscreen, water, and Gatorade are provided. Students must keep good hygiene throughout the week.
  • Manners: "Good morning," "please," and "thank you" go a long way. Please be courteous of other people and pick up after yourself.
  • Money Management: Students receive a prepaid Visa card to use for meals. This must last them the entire week. Students are responsible for purchasing any souvenirs.
  • Punctuality: Students must report at designated times throughout the week on time. Lack of punctuality will not only put the student behind schedule, but the entire group of 70-ish students from PA and NJ.
  • Thoroughness: All paperwork must be submitted fully complete and notarized by Wednesday, February 18, 2026.
